Lawyers for Dog Bite Cases in Toronto, Brampton, Scarborough, GTA and Ontario

Dog bite victims often suffer serious physical and emotional repercussions. If you’ve been injured in an animal attack in Ontario, you don’t have to suffer in silence. There are legal resources available to you in the fight for justice and fair financial compensation. You may be eligible receive money to address medical bills, lost wages, and other losses associated with the injury.

Providing Liability After a Dog Bite or Attack

Even though dogs are considered to be “man’s best friend”, the inevitable truth is that dogs can pose a serious risk of harm. Even the most friendly or docile dogs may unexpectedly attack or bite someone. Attacks and bites can lead to disfigurement, medical injuries, scarring, pain, and psychological suffering. On some occasions, injuries can even be fatal.

Under the Dog Owner’s Liability Act in Ontario, a dog’s owner is held responsible for injuries caused in an attack. The owners are liable to pay compensation for any injuries or losses that his or her dog may have caused. When assessing compensation for a victim, a court will decide based on a number of factors.

The court will consider:

  • If the victim’s life will be affected
  • Whether future surgeries will be needed
  • If the injuries are permanent
  • Whether the victim had to miss work due to his or her injuries
  • Whether the victim spent money on medical matters

Not everyone is entitled to claim compensation in the event of a dog attack. Each case is different and built upon unique circumstances. The court will also consider the events that led to the attack and whether the victim’s actions contributed to the dog bite. For example, if the victim tried chasing the dog and the dog reacted by biting, then the court might not view the owner as responsible.

Effects of a Dog Bite Case

Since each case is different, there is no guarantee to the outcome of a case. Depending on the injuries sustained and the circumstances, the court will decide upon a fair and justified action.

For the protection of the public, the court might order:

  • Euthanization
  • Confinement of property and warning signs
  • Mandatory leashes or muzzles
  • Owner fines
  • Mandatory sterilization
  • Preventing further dog ownership for a period of time

Our personal injury lawyers for animal and dog bites will strive for fair compensation for your injuries and suffering. We help victims of serious dog bites obtain compensation for their losses in Toronto, outside of the Greater Toronto Area, and throughout Ontario.
